We've all heard about melatonin. But do we know what it really is?

Melatonin appeared very early in evolution. It is found in bacteria, single-celled eukaryotes, invertebrates and vertebrates, algae, plants and fungi, as well as in various foods such as vegetables, fruits, herbs and seeds. Simply put, melatonin is the main hormone secreted by the pineal gland in the human body. The pineal gland is involved in many functions of the body, secreting the hormone melatonin, which is characterized by functional pleiotropy, meaning that it has the ability to act in different directions. Melatonin is synthesized from tryptophan in pineal gland cells, secretion begins in the absence of light and is high at night. During the day, the opposite happens - the amount of melatonin in our body is the smallest during the light phase.

Knowing how melatonin works, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of its production.

Melatonin synthesis and secretion are enhanced in the dark and suppressed by light. Light information is transmitted from the retina to the pineal gland. In humans, its secretion begins shortly after sunset, reaches a peak in the middle of the night (between 2 and 4 am) and gradually decreases in the second half of the night. Almost 80% of melatonin is synthesized at night, and its amount during daylight hours (compared to nighttime) is small (Tordjman et al., 2017).

There are many scientific materials and studies available describing the effects of melatonin on the human body. Of course, this hormone is involved in the body’s adaptation to the light-dark cycle of the environment. Its participation in the regulation of biological rhythms has also been proven (Kostoglou-Athanassiou, 2013).

Do you have problems falling asleep? Are you waiting too long to sleep?

Melatonin may be a solution because it helps reduce the time it takes to fall asleep. However, it should be remembered that the beneficial effect of melatonin occurs when consumed 1 mg - shortly before bedtime.
